Party Time! Winter Park Resort Officially Unveils Mary Jane Ale Cans

By: Tyler Macleod

While skiers and snowboarders are anxiously awaiting the official opening of Winter Park Resort’s Mary Jane Territory for the season, there was still plenty of celebration for everyone’s favorite lady at the ski area on Saturday afternoon.

Crowds gathered outside of the Derailer bar in Winter Park Resort’s Village area around 12 p.m. for the official launch party of the much-anticipated Mary Jane Ale cans. Brewed by the iconic New Belgium Brewing Company since 2014, Mary Jane Ale was previously only available on draft at select establishments throughout Winter Park Resort. This season marks the first time ever that the popular brew has been made available to the masses, with it now canned, bottled and available at select liquor stores across Colorado. For a state that is equally prideful of both its beer and skiing, it would be hard to find a better excuse to celebrate. While New Belgium Brewing has become a massive cultural icon in the recent craft beer renaissance, Mary Jane has long been regarded as one of the ski community’s best-kept secrets; sitting high on any diehard skier or snowboarder’s must-visit lists for decades. She has developed an almost cult-like following among those who have experienced the thigh-burning bump runs and adrenaline-pumping trees that make her unlike any other ski area in North America. And while event-goers surely would’ve loved to have been taking laps down Mary Jane’s signature, un-groomed trails to officially launch the collaboration, there was still plenty of high energy and good vibes circulating around the base of Winter Park Resort on Saturday. With free tastings, games and giveaways throughout the afternoon, Mary Jane was clearly the center of attention, despite the territory still waiting to be open for the season.

As a DJ cranked tunes from the Derailer bar, skiers and snowboarders scoured the mountain for Mary Jane plaques, as part of a scavenger hunt in celebration of the newly canned beer. Together, Winter Park Resort and New Belgium Brewing handed out a barrel of prizes, with everything from Mary Jane Ale merchandise to a Winter Park season pass and even a custom, winterized New Belgium cruiser bike up for grabs. To cap off the celebration, Winter Park Resort also hosted what was unofficially the first Snow Blade Competition for the ski area, located at the base of the Larry Sale run and directly in front of the Derailer bar festivities. Competitors strapped into their blades and raced down a slalom-type course in hopes of earning the coveted Mary Jane Ale trophy, which, to no surprise, was constructed with the new Mary Jane Ale cans.

With no date set for the season opening of the Mary Jane Territory quite yet, Saturday’s Mary Jane Ale Can Launch Party was more than enough to hold over her biggest fans. And when she does officially open, at least the beer will be cold, canned and ready for the second round of celebrations.
