Last year’s annual event lasted two-days, each featuring a lineup of newer artists, capped off with a performance by a well-known headliner. Saturday featured Dragondeer, Honey Island Swamp Band, Southern Avenue, Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, and was finished off by the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. The KWSB has released multiple albums, and is a popular blues group beloved by many.

Sunday also showcased a star, but started the day off with performances by Fuse Worship, Kara Grainger, the Nick Moss Band, Vintage Trouble, and finally a performance by the North Mississippi Allstars. The Allstars are made up of two brothers, Luther and Cody Dickinson. The pair have combined to create several albums, and are currently on on tour, playing at several venues across the United States. The duo were quite a hit last year, expect the Grand County Blues Society to work some more magic this year!

Lots of people lined up their cars throughout the town and walked over to Hideaway Park to enjoy two full days of live “food for the soul” music.

As someone not in the “Blues” scene, going to the festival gave me a chance to experience why people like this genre of music. What is so “cool” about it? I understand the historical significance but what makes it so special today?

As I observed the crowd, I could easily get a sense of certain “cool” these blues fans transmit and how “easy going” they were.[/vc_column_text][vc_media_grid element_width=”6″ gap=”10″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1472053030214-af1fa628-dd65-10″ include=”6789,6790″][vc_column_text]After a while I started to feel the music, and the vibe of those around me. To me these blues fans were getting a dose of much needed “therapy” and what better place to “self-soothe” the soul then at Hideaway Park. The weather could not be more perfect! It was almost as if the clouds in the sky changed formation as the bands changed their tone. A couple drops of rain for some deep soul, then opening up to some bright sunshine for that “upbeat, get on your feet and dance your blues away” kind of music.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”6786″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”link_image”][vc_column_text]

What makes Blues from the top special anyway?

Blues From The Top is just different than all other festivals in Winter Park. While taking pictures and looking around, I observed a mix of very young and old dedicated to “keeping the Blues alive.” This crowd was mellow but you could feel the “good vibes” all around. The dancing and appreciation for this “more than music” festival was present and alive.

Soul, Good Vibes, Therapy and Love truly made last weekend an unforgettable one!

Also, what other festival lets talented young people have the opportunity to express themselves in front of thousands?

The energy of these young people on stage was so fun to watch. I could not get over the passion I saw while they performed for such an important genre.[/vc_column_text][vc_media_grid gap=”10″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1472053030218-0b1ed7c8-bc7a-10″ include=”6793,6798,6795,6796,6794,6797″][vc_column_text]Sometimes I feel Grand County lacks diversity and culture, but while I was at the festival I was reminded about the people in our community who work very hard (volunteer) to make this happen. The Grand County Blues Society has created a Blues culture in Winter Park for years now that is truly special. Producing 14 festivals and over 150 shows through out the year and also getting the youth to show an interest in music. Any time of year they make the Blues culture alive and easily available to locals and visitors alike.

I also love the dedication of the volunteers that work long hours at each of our festivals-these people make it safe and help the festivals run smoothly so music goers can sit back and enjoy.

We hope you were there last weekend and enjoyed the Blues From Top, with the perfect backdrop of the Great Divide ringing soulful music throughout the valley.

Hope to see you next year!
